Direct funding for community health centers has been eliminated in the Governor’s FY2005 budget. Every year, community health centers serve over 600,000 residents throughout Massachusetts regardless of their ability to pay. They provide comprehensive, high quality, cost-effective care in urban and rural neighborhoods and communities. Despite this fact, the Governor’s FY2005 budget removes the Commonwealth’s health care safety net and leaves everyone exposed.

Community Health Center Support and Enhancement (line 4510-0110) and Managed Care at Community Health Centers (line 4510-0150) budget line appropriations have been eliminated resulting in a loss of $6.8 million! This funding supports vital services that are not reimbursable like case management, interpreter services, outreach and education, nutrition, eligibility determination, and financial counseling. If this funding is not restored, these vital services will be eliminated and community health centers will be irreparably damaged.
In this time of fiscal austerity, Massachusetts’s community health centers are under severe financial pressure. At a time when there are increasing numbers of uninsured and underinsured people in need of care, community health centers remain the vital solution to the problems of health care access. We cannot allow these deep cuts to be inflicted upon them.
